Xerxes Fanart
by Jonas Diego
This has got to be one of the art pieces I had the most fun drawing because, let’s face it, how can you not enjoy drawing Xerxes?
He’s certainly one of the more visually interesting characters in the big screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s epic of a graphic novel, 300.
I based the piece from a 300 movie wallpaper I found online.
I took certain liberties (quite modest, I assure you) with the illustration such as adding flying spittle from his mouth and the generous application of shadows to give the piece a more striking appearance.
I used non-repro blue pencils to draft the rough sketch then used Chinese ink and brush to ink the piece. I also did clean-up and very minimal editing in Adobe Photoshop, mostly just to remove smudges and little bits of dirt. I also adjusted the level to get a deep and even black.
The whole exercise took around 3 hours from the pencilling and inking up to the clean-up.
