You Make History
by Czari Flores
In Metro Comic Con’s “Creating Comics 101” workshop, one of the speakers who was a proud probinsyano from Mindanao received such a positive response from the workshoppers. With difficulty in using English yet with great confidence, he proudly introduced himself as Harvey Tolibao, one of Marvel’s Filipino comic book artists. His enthusiasm and passion in imparting knowledge and wisdom to the attendees were very evident with his lecture, way of speaking, and prepared presentation.
But more than that, he created a connection between himself and the audience because of his knack sense of humor and inspiring stories.
It Started with a Dream
Although Mindanao is geographically far from the country’s capital region where the developments are faster, in his hometown Harvey had begun dreaming of being able to draw for Star Wars comics. It seemed that the dream was as unreachable as the stars, but Harvey did what he loved doing most: DRAWING. He would draw anywhere, anytime, and on anything when he can. He would draw everyday, even when just queuing up in a line or riding a Jeepney stuck in traffic. When he would see a blank piece of paper, whether they’re just scraps of papers or wrappers, he shared “heaven yoon para sa akin” because he loved drawing so much.
