300 Fan Art
by Jonas Diego
The movie 300 is one of my all time favorites…of all time!
Zack Snyder captured the essence of the Frank Miller graphic novel and translated it into the big screen and turned the dial all the way to ten!
If you ever had the chance to read 300 you’ll see that Zack referenced the graphic novel almost frame by frame, pretty much like a storyboard.
More than the visual, a lot of folks were able to relate to the story of the 300 Spartans battling against the juggernaut which was Xerxes’ army, knowing that the odds cannot be beat, and yet fighting nonetheless to the last man.
I referenced this drawing from a screenshot I took of the movie.
Unlike previous 300 related drawings I drew before where I used non-repro blue pencils to draft the rough sketch, I used an HB pencil to sketch the draft and then used Chinese ink and brush to ink the piece.
I also used technical pens, point 0.1 mostly, to add fine details which I couldn’t achieve using my brushes. It takes a level of control which I have not mastered yet to draw very fine details using only a brush and thus I resort to technical pens in situations like this.
I need more practice, I guess.
As usual I did clean-up and editing in Adobe Photoshop, mostly just to remove smudges and little bits of dirt.
I also adjusted the level to get a deep and even black.
The whole process of sketching and drawing took me about 4 hours.
