We want MORE Girls…in COMICS!

by Jonas Diego

Any girl looking to make a name for herself in the Philippine Comic Book Industry is sure to immediately stand out simply because there’s not a whole of them to begin with.

It kinda makes you wonder why there aren’t more women in comics (both as readers and as creators).

Do the throngs of weird fan boys tend to scare them off or comics in general just don’t interest them?

In the US comic book scene, “there was a time when more girls read comics than boys.”

Nowadays, it is believed that the majority of comic book readers are male.

There were various schools of thought on why the number of female readers dwindled as time passed. One possible reason was that, more and more, “female characters and superheroes were targeted towards a predominantly male demographic” instead of women readers.

“It has been debated whether the perceived lack of female readership was due to male writers being uncomfortable with writing about or for women, or whether the comic book industry is male dominated due to the lack of intrinsic interest of women in comics.”
