How did you get started in comic books?
I grew up reading newsstand komiks like Funny Komiks and Bata Batuta, as well as newspaper strips like Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield (both of which are significant influences in my work). And I’ve always like telling stories. But I got into comics as a storytelling medium, in particular, because a part of me has always had self-confidence issues – I felt that I couldn’t be as great as other writers, or as skilled as other artists, but I can do both, and comics was a way of expressing that.
Who are your greatest influences?
I’ve mentioned Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) and Jim Davis (Garfield), but really I’m more like taking bits and bobs from this and that, from a wide range of material from manga to animation to graphic design, and trying to see how to make them all work together.
What is the greatest comic book of all time?
Just one? But there’s so many to choose from! I guess for the level of craft, Watchmen, although I’m more partial to graphic novels that resonate with me on an emotional level – Batman: Year One, Cyril Pedrosa’s Three Shadows, and Greg Rucka’s Queen and Country.
Who is the greatest comic book creator of all time?
Right now, I’m really digging Geoff Johns.
