The movie 300 is one of my all time favorites…of all time!

Zack Snyder captured the essence of the Frank Miller graphic novel and translated it into the big screen and turned the dial all the way to ten!

If you ever had the chance to read 300 you’ll see that Zack referenced the graphic novel almost frame by frame, pretty much like a storyboard.

More than the visual, a lot of folks were able to relate to the story of the 300 Spartans battling against the juggernaut which was Xerxes’ army, knowing that the odds cannot be beat, and yet fighting nonetheless to the last man.

I referenced this drawing from a screenshot I took of the movie.

Unlike previous 300 related drawings I drew before where I used non-repro blue pencils to draft the rough sketch, I used an HB pencil to sketch the draft and then used Chinese ink and brush to ink the piece.

I also used technical pens, point 0.1 mostly, to add fine details which I couldn’t achieve using my brushes. It takes a level of control which I have not mastered yet to draw very fine details using only a brush and thus I resort to technical pens in situations like this.

I need more practice, I guess.

As usual I did clean-up and editing in Adobe Photoshop, mostly just to remove smudges and little bits of dirt.

I also adjusted the level to get a deep and even black.

The whole process of sketching and drawing took me about 4 hours.

He’s certainly one of the more visually interesting characters in the big screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s epic of a graphic novel, 300.

I took certain liberties (quite modest, I assure you) with the illustration such as adding flying spittle from his mouth and the generous application of shadows to give the piece a more striking appearance.

I used non-repro blue pencils to draft the rough sketch then used Chinese ink and brush to ink the piece. I also did clean-up and very minimal editing in Adobe Photoshop, mostly just to remove smudges and little bits of dirt. I also adjusted the level to get a deep and even black.

The whole exercise took around 3 hours from the pencilling and inking up to the clean-up.

I used pencils (Mongol 1 and 2, if I remember correctly) to draw the figure and then used poster color and an old Chinese bamboo brush to add hues to the illustration.

It looks warped on some places because this was drawn at the back of some used copy paper I keep as my makeshift sketch pad.

The illustration took me about 2 hours to do including the colors.

If at all, he looks like he was born to be drawn in a comic book title with his gaunt features and very distinct way of speaking.

I referenced this quick pencil sketch from a picture of Pepe Smith in an issue of FHM.

I drew fast and loose, trying to capture the essence and attitude of Pepe in the photograph rather than going for anatomical accuracy. I decided not to ink the piece to retain the roughness of the artwork which I think also describes his music.

If I remember correctly, the Captain America shield on his shirt wasn’t on the photograph I used.

I just added there for fun.

I used a 2B and a 3B Mars Lumograph pencil and a kneaded eraser drawn on ordinary bond paper. The entire sketch took about fifteen minutes tops.

“Comic book characters used to stay mostly in their own titles.

But then, someone had the bright idea to throw various characters together and watch the sparks fly. Cross-overs were born.

Now there have been some nasty cross-overs, like Batman vs Dracula, and there have been some inspired ones, like Red Rain, so I felt that it was time to give vent to a cross-over idea that’s been brewing in my brain for some time now.

This is where we feature artworks made by the fans in tribute to their favorite comic book characters.

Since this place is still new and all (and we still have some ways to go in terms of building a readership) I figure I’d go first and feature the fan arts that I’ve made over the years while we’re waiting for you folks out there to show us your stuff.

Blade has always been one of my favorite comic book movie characters.

I say comic book movie characters because I’ve only become aware of the comic book character through the Blade trilogy movies. Besides, the movie version was (in a lot of ways) more “astig” than its comic book incarnation.

Marvel has since then taken steps to rectify this however and the Blade comic book franchise has become all the better for it.

Blade was created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciller Gene Colan with his first appearance in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10 (July 1973) as a supporting character. He was mostly a little known piece of fiction until the movie created renewed and widespread interest in the vampire hunter known as the Daywalker.

I referenced this pencil drawing from VCD cover of the second installment of the Blade Trilogy. I used non-repro blue pencil to rough out the drawing and then used a combination of 2B and 3B Mars Lumograph pencils to flesh out the rest of the illustration.
